Netherlands-based electric boat startup Edorado Marine has announced the availability of its electric hydrofoil system for other boat manufacturers and tender builders. Using its 8S model hydrofoil e-boat as a platform, Edorado says it is democratizing its power and propulsion system for OEMs and boatbuilders to incorporate it into their custom boat designs.

The company is presenting the new system for the first time next week in Amsterdam at the METSTRADE 2023 show, which bills itself as the world’s largest trade exhibition for equipment, materials, and systems for the global leisure marine industry. Organized by RAI Amsterdam in cooperation with ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations), the event’s target audience includes yacht builders, naval architects, refit yards, distributors, dealers, wholesalers, captains, marina owners, and marine equipment manufacturers.

“In our pursuit of sustainability and making the maritime industry greener, we are thrilled to announce the global availability of our hydrofoil electric system for tender builders and boat manufacturers,” said Godert van Hardenbroek, Founder and CEO at Edorado. “Our ready-made platform represents a unique opportunity for customers to unleash their creativity and design their own boats. This platform simplifies the design process and ensures compliance with our established parameters to maintain ideal weight-to-size ratios.”

Edorado readily admits that this new approach deviates from the conventional method of development collaboration. Instead, the company says it empowers customers by offering a pre-defined platform on which they can work with naval architects. Edorado says it will act as a support system, guiding customers through the vessel design process to ensure adherence to the established framework.

Targeted at multiple marine industry segments, Edorado’s hydrofoil electric platform with integrated retraction offers a flat vessel floor that opens up possibilities for customization. Boat builders and manufacturers can design and engineer their own unique watercraft, tailored to their specific needs and preferences. The company claims this flexibility will empower its design partners to create vessels that are as unique as the customers they serve.

The production version of the twin-drive Edorado 8S debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. It uses two 40-kW·h batteries and two Torqeedo Deep Blue 50 motors to power its carbon-fiber hull and fully retractable hydrofoil system. The e-boat’s energy consumption is listed as 1.08 kW·h/km (2 kW·h/nmi), and it can achieve a top speed of 74 km/h (40 kn). The 8S measures 8.40 m (27.5 ft) long, 2.50 m (8.2 ft) wide, and displaces 1950 kg (4300 lb). The 8S also features a Collision Impact Safety System, a fully integrated user interface, and a closed cooling system.

The 8S has been nominated for the European Powerboat of the Year 2024 Award, in the Electric category, to be announced in early 2024.
