Alpha Motor Corp., the California-based EV (electric vehicle) startup in its formative stages, has unveiled its second vehicle. The ACE Coupe is hailed as “the quintessential urban electric vehicle set to transform zero-emission mobility.” It follows the launch of its first electric vehicle less than a month ago of the ICON EUV (electric utility vehicle) for personal and commercial use.

The ACE Coupe, unveiled in a unique Blue Seraph metallic finish, is designed to balance versatility, performance, and sustainability on a compact footprint that supports multiple body styles including coupe, sedan, and utility crossover. It is built on a modular vehicle platform that is an extension of the ICON base.

While still preliminary, some of the 2+2 coupe’s specs have been released. The car is about the length of a Kia Soul at 4180 mm (165 in), in addition to 1886 mm (74 in) wide, and 1450 mm (57 in) tall—and it weighs 3600 lb (1633 kg). The rear-wheel-drive coupe is targeted to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6 s and has an electric range of more than 250 mi (402 km). Batteries are an unspecified type or capacity, but they are cooled or heated based on needs.

“The ACE Coupe is for consumers who desire a sleek ride with the versatility, energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness of an electric vehicle,” stated Michael Smith, Alpha Motor Corp. Chief Executive Officer.

Underneath its hood and rear hatch is said to be “abundant cargo space” of 14 ft³ (396 L) enabled by its electric vehicle architecture. Inside are two comfortable front seats and compact rear seats for occasional storage. The interior architecture is focused on optimizing cabin space and reducing components without compromising ergonomic comfort or ease of use. A central display integrates user interface controls that can be synchronized or replaced with the user’s own electronic device.

The company says its mission is “accelerating innovation for humanity,” its contribution being to responsibly design, engineer, and manufacture the world’s most desired electric vehicles. It believes the automotive landscape faces existential disruption over the next 5-7 years as governments around the world target regulations to achieve carbon neutrality.

Alpha is targeting the interests of both businesses and consumers with a strategy beginning with what it calls the “ideal footprint,” with its vehicles sized to fit their purpose. The second driver is “accessibility,” with a mission to create accessible, high-quality vehicles through an optimal process that enables price customization; consumers choose their ideal price point. A third focus is on “ideal options,” with vehicles designed and engineered to be compatible with the latest technologies resulting in an exceptional mobility technology experience.

On its website, the company cites an example of its environmental impact. It says that 10,417 gallons of gasoline will never leave the pump, 521 barrels of crude oil will never leave the ground, and 101 tons of CO2 will never enter our atmosphere. These numbers are based, respectively, on ICON battery life of 250,000 mi (250 mi/charge at 1000 charges) and an average 24 mpg for an ICE vehicle; refinery output of 20 gallons of gasoline per barrel of crude oil; and 19.36 lb of CO2 per gallon (www.carbonfund.org).

The company’s first vehicle reveal, the ICON, is configurable into an SUV, van, or truck. It is said to integrate renewable vehicle technology on a modular platform differentiated from other skateboard-like EV chassis. That platform enables easy replacement, recycling, and refreshing of major components, including the battery, external body, and interior components critical to its shelf life. This enables customizable solutions for individuals, businesses, and municipal and government entities.

In conjunction with the ICON reveal, the company said its development strategy prioritizes the three Rs—renewable, recyclable, and replaceable—in its commitment to developing sustainable mobility solutions. The low-profile Alpha team has decades of experience in designing, engineering, and producing automobiles.

“Alpha will manufacture ICON in the United States to help boost the economy through the creation of jobs and transform connected enterprises to support a carbon-neutral future,” said Smith. “The company is evaluating prospective venues and production options.”

The ICON’s market launch timing is predicated on rapid electric vehicle development and homologation program. The company says it will be releasing significant information regarding the ICON in the coming months.

Presumably, the same applies to the company’s more commercially and autonomously oriented vehicles on the Automobile Modular Platform (AMP). It says the letter A also represents autonomous vehicles equipped with self-driving technology.

One of those AMP-based vehicles is the modular COM, whose structure and dimensions can be modified into a bus, van, truck, or a medium to heavy-duty cargo transporter. The structural versatility of COM enables various load capacities for commercial operation, with variants including the COM-1 for commercial mobility such as buses and other medium-/heavy-duty vehicles; COM-2 communal mobility for passenger vans and utility vehicles; and COM-3 computed mobility (self-driving) vehicles.
