Watters Creek Village, a mixed-use development area in Allen, TX, will soon be the site of the largest non-Tesla-owned DC fast-charging hub for electric vehicles (EVs). XCharge North America, a battery storage and EV charging solutions provider, announced plans to build the new EV charging superhub in the Dallas-area suburb earlier this week.
According to the company, the new charging superhub will feature more than 20 stalls with ultra-fast chargers, providing EV drivers with max outputs ranging from 200 to 400 kW per port. It will include 3 MW·h of storage capacity that will offer grid support.
Designed to handle seismic weather events, the superhub will be capable of sustaining and redistributing energy resources, actively returning surplus energy to the grid in addition to charging EVs. The company says this commitment aligns with the community’s broader goal of sustainable and community-focused initiatives.
“XCharge North America remains at the forefront of sustainable mobility innovation, and our vision advances with the unveiling of the 3 MW·h battery storage grid support at the Watters Creek Village mixed-use development near Dallas,” said XCharge North America President Aatish Patel. “With over 20 ultra-fast ports, this cutting-edge facility represents a noteworthy stride towards more sustainable and easily accessible electric vehicle infrastructure.”
No timeline for the EV charging superhub’s completion was provided by XCharge NA.
Watters Creek Village is a Dallas-area shopping and entertainment destination with a mix of amenities including various retail options, outdoor restaurants, office space, and residential lofts. XCharge NA said the addition of its chargers will support greener local transportation while offering businesses a potential new revenue stream.
“The upcoming EV Charging Superhub will not only position Watters Creek as a leader in sustainable development but also establish itself as the largest high-end DC fast-charging destination in the region,” said James Roussel with Watters Creek Village. “For those who have not visited Watters Creek recently, we invite you to visit our ever-improving shopping center. In 2023, we invested over $2 million into our customer experiences. This included improvements in landscaping, lighting, painting, parking upgrades, and other repairs.”
This will be the second XCharge NA deployment in Allen following the installation of charging infrastructure at the corporate headquarters of digital infrastructure consulting company MD7 last year. In November 2023, XCharge NA inaugurated a new charging facility at its headquarters building in Kyle, TX.
The company calls its new NZS (Net Zero Series) EV charger the first truly battery-integrated EV charger in the U.S. Significantly, it is equipped with a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery as buffer storage, allowing for easy installation and highly stable operations.
The battery-based charging station provides a 194-kW maximum output with two charging ports. That is nearly 20 times more output than the majority of L2 chargers, significantly reducing charging idle time to 35-45 min.
Integrated bi-directional energy storage allows the NZS to store up to 233 kW·h of electricity while reducing the needed infrastructure to support this power transfer. The storage can be used to not only charge vehicles but also act as emergency power for surrounding buildings and additional support to the grid in times of need or during blackouts. Its bi-directional AC/DC modules allow vehicles and the storage unit to sell back energy to the grid, which enables peak shaving capabilities and more flexibility in operation.
