Detroit-based electric RV startup Grounded today announced the launch of the G2, which it says is the world’s first 250-mi (402-km) range all-electric solar-equipped RV. Built on the BrightDrop Zevo 600 platform, the all-wheel drive G2 is 290 in (7366 mm) long on a 183-in (4648-mm) wheelbase 615 ft² (57-m²) of living space, and a payload 1460 lb (662 kg).

While Grounded released the G1 earlier this year with “a limited number of use cases” due to its 100-mi (160-km) range, the company says that the G2’s 250-mi range makes it the inaugural, viable electric motorhome.

“The G2 is radically different from any other offering on the market,” said Grounded CEO Sam Shapiro. “It’s a profound step toward a future of fully electrified motorhomes and makes sustainable travel truly achievable. We’ve designed the G2 to be as flexible as possible, and our truly modular interior delivers on the promise of a continually upgradable RV interior. Over time, as your life changes and your use cases change, the vehicle can change with you. Customers can replace the modules themselves by removing some fasteners, taking out one module, and inserting a new one.”

Grounded was founded in 2022 by a group of ex-Tesla and –SpaceX engineers to create vehicles and technology that “give people the freedom and self-reliance to live, work, and explore anywhere, sustainably integrated with nature.” CEO Shapiro worked as a Senior Software Engineer at SpaceX, where he wrote embedded software for Starlink hardware.

The G2’s AWD powertrain offers 390 lb·ft (529 N·m). In addition to a 165-kW·h vehicle-propulsion battery, Grounded adds a 10-kW·h house battery to power interior features, which can be charged from the propulsion battery and a 640-W rooftop solar unit.

Basing it on a BrightDrop means it can be charged at thousands of nationwide destination EV chargers including the Electrify America network and other public EV chargers with CCS connectors. As Tesla opens up its Supercharger network to other OEM vehicles with CCS, the G2 may eventually be able to be charged at Supercharger locations in the future. The max charging rate can add 170 mi (274 km) of range per hour.

The G2’s interior is designed around a grid-based modular system for which customers can design their vehicle layout by selecting from a library of modules and choosing the location of each module. Grounded’s online store will offer additional modules for purchase within 6 months of launch.

Exposed mounting rails in the vehicle allow customers to add and remove modules themselves based on use cases, life changes, and redecoration needs. The rails can also be used by customers for mounting accessories, either provided by Grounded or sourced elsewhere.

Once a customer places a deposit, a Grounded team member reaches out to schedule the design call and then proceeds with the build.

The interior is designed with not only comfort but also sustainability in mind. All building materials meet the M1 emissions classification to ensure a “truly clean product.” Aluminum, known for its recyclability, is used in constructing the modular interior structure.

“To design the interior, we drew inspiration from contemporary Nordic outdoor gear,” said Shapiro. “Optional components include a spacious queen bed, seating for up to 7, a large pull-out table for work or dining, and a well-equipped kitchen for the adventurous chef.”

KoskiDecor Eco Transparent, a line of decorative plywood by Koskisen, adds 11 color customization options. Composed of Finnish Baltic birch, a layer of colored translucent melamine coating on each side highlights the plywood’s natural grain and protects against scuffs and scratches.

The G2 offers advanced safety features like front pedestrian braking, front and rear parking assist, and lane keep assist. Other key vehicle features include Starlink high-speed internet, rear heating and cooling, ample storage space, indoor shower and wet bath options, hot water, and induction stovetops.

The Grounded+ App connects the company’s proprietary software to all electronic systems, allowing users to view their energy usage patterns and optimization possibilities, turn appliances on and off remotely, see real-time battery and water levels, and diagnose potential issues.

The vehicle platform warranty is covered by BrightDrop, which offers a growing network of service centers across the country, for 8 years or 100,000 mi, whichever comes first. An interior warranty from Grounded covers the replacement of any product that breaks within one year due to a product defect.

The company manufactures the G2 in Newlab’s Michigan Central Mobility Studio in Detroit. Fully equipped vehicles with the largest battery pack will enter production first.

Pricing starts at $187,500 after a Federal Tax credit. Financing is available, with deliveries beginning this month. Grounded is now accepting orders with a refundable deposit of $1000, with more information available at https://www.groundedrvs.com/.
