Genesis has unveiled an off-road concept vehicle designed for demanding terrain like the Rub’ al Khali “Empty Quarter” desert in the United Arab Emirates where it was shown. The X Skorpio Concept is the Hyundai Motor Group luxury brand’s first extreme off-road vehicle and headlines a new concept-car strategy to connect with off-road enthusiasts with active lifestyles. It debuted alongside other concept vehicles—the GV60 Outdoors Concept, GV70 Outdoors Concept, and GV80 Desert Edition—optimized for rugged environments.

The brand revealed the concept to not only reach a diverse audience of enthusiast-driven customers but also tap into the UAE’s rapidly growing market for luxury cars. It says the demand for the latest models and technological advancements in the Middle East continues to grow, making it a vital market to establish a strong brand presence and connect with its expanding customer base.

The concept is tailored to the automotive culture and lifestyle of the Middle East, where off-road racing and recreational driving, often at high speeds and airborne, is a favorite pastime. Its aerodynamic design is meant to minimize drag while maximizing stability, keeping the vehicle steady on and off the road and ensuring safe landings and reliable handling.

The brand says the X Skorpio Concept’s name draws inspiration from a black scorpion, known for its resilience and ability to thrive in harsh environments. The concept was shown in orange and black variants, with the latter’s color palette and materials chosen to capture the essence of a black scorpion. The exterior features a deep black base with a vibrant blue tint to create a striking visual effect mimicking a scorpion’s natural hues.

The arching tail of a scorpion inspired the vehicle’s curves and sculpted body. Its armor-like panels not only evoke the protective nature of a scorpion’s exoskeleton but also allow for quick repairs in extreme environments. Key design features are the functional sand-minimizing roof air scoop and Genesis’ signature Two-Line design integrated into the front and rear lamps.

“The X Skorpio concept is an extreme off-road vehicle designed to be driven across the toughest and harshest terrain,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis. “With a tubular frame, a full roll cage, and many components sourced directly from off-road endurance racing specialists, the X Skorpio Concept explores yet another facet of the Genesis brand and highlights our intent to inject emotion and adrenaline into different segments.”

Allowing the concept to traverse the roughest terrain are generous approach and departure angles, a short wheelbase, high break-over angles, and a finely tuned suspension with extreme ground clearance. High-clearance fenders, skid plates, and precision-engineered components work to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck or damaged.

The vehicle is constructed using a combination of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar for a balance of durability and reduced weight. An integrated roll cage, a four-point harness system, and reinforced structural components are meant to ensure maximum protection for drivers and passengers.

Power comes from a high-performance V8 engine delivering 1100 hp (820 kW) and 850 lb·ft (1152 N·m). The rugged-terrain chassis features include 18-in beadlock wheels, custom BFGoodrich 40-in off-road tires, and Brembo motorsport brakes.

The concept’s interior is meant to redefine luxury in the off-road segment, adding to the stripped-down utilitarianism of traditional Trophy Trucks. It is meant to ensure driver performance and passenger comfort during physically demanding off-road challenges. Highlights are the ergonomic seating, intuitive controls, and climate control systems intended to enhance performance and reduce driver fatigue.

The interior materials reflect a scorpion’s nature. Luxurious suede with intricate gradient patterns, crafted using state-of-the-art laser-cutting techniques, is paired with leather that features stitching inspired by the segmented legs of a scorpion. Designers chose matte and glossy finishes and painted interior trim pieces to match the exterior.

The user-interface concept features a steering-wheel-mounted instrument cluster and a sliding display that reconfigures between solo-rider and co-piloted modes—a centered position for the driver or sliding to the passenger for copilot navigation. Safety grab handles ensure stability during rough movements. Advanced communication systems ensure connectivity in the most remote environments.

The X Skorpio Concept’s design reflects Genesis’ latest comprehensive concept-car strategy, integrating a design philosophy called “Athletic Elegance” that encompasses three “emotional facets of luxury, sport, and cool.” According to the brand, luxury is represented by Korean refinement through intricate craftsmanship, understated beauty, and meticulous attention to detail; sport by quiet confidence equipped with ample power for those who enjoy challenges while balancing speed and composure; and cool by adventurous and lifestyle-driven designs driven by individual taste and self-expression.

“By aligning our designs with these qualities, Genesis aims to foster emotional connections with customers, generate valuable feedback, and solidify our position as an industry leader in luxury automotive innovation,” said Donckerwolke.
