Segway, the self-described global leader in micromobility and robotics technology, today launched its first two highly anticipated electric bikes. With the Xyber and Xafari, the company is aiming to redefine the segment and make the experience of riding an e-bike not only easier but also more fun, safe, convenient, and accessible for more people by combining cutting-edge technology with class-leading features, benefits, and performance.
“With the official launch of the Xyber and Xafari, we are using technology to redefine the electric bike experience,” said Nick Howe, Segway’s Head of E-bike. “You don’t have to consider yourself a cyclist to feel the freedom and joy of two wheels. And with features like our Intelligent Ride System, we’re empowering both new riders and dyed-in-the-wool cyclists to simply ‘ride better.’”
Described by the company as more than an e-bike, the Xyber is a mid-range, light electric vehicle with a cast-aluminum, double-cradle frame.
In Race Mode, it can accelerate from 0 to 20 mph in 2.7 s thanks to a torquey direct-drive electric motor and can also go up to 112 or 56 mi between charges in its 2880- or 1440-W·h dual-battery configuration. Weight is 146 lb and payload 408 lb.
The Xafari features a modern take on a classic step-through frame. The all-terrain electric cruiser is designed for riders of all ages and skill levels. A 750-W, 80-N·m motor provides acceleration from 0 to 20 mph in 5.2 s. Its class-leading range of up to 88 mi is enabled by an efficient 936-W·h battery and smart battery management system.
Comfort is a key focus with upright geometry and bump-smoothing suspension with adjustable preload, compression damping, and lock-out on the fork. Adjustable height seat, stem/handlebar, and display make it easy to fit riders from 5’ 1” to 6’2”. Weight is 85 lb and payload 395 lb.
The maximum assisted speed for both e-bikes is 20 mph (Class 2).
The Xyber and Xafari share Segway’s Intelligent Ride System, an integrated suite of smart tech and features.
AirLock wireless proximity security automatically engages mechanical locks and shuts out system access to unauthorized users. Apple Find My and Segway GPS dual-component tracking allow an owner to know where their bike is at all times.
Segway IOT works with GPS to allow for remote monitoring, control through the app, over-the-air updates, and maintenance updates and prompts. Bike/user and bike/battery cloud binding thwarts against unauthorized use of vehicle or battery removal.
Adaptive pedal assist automatically adjusts output based on slope angle, terrain, and the rider’s effort thanks to an advanced gradient algorithm, internal gyroscope, and cadence sensor on the Xyber and torque sensor on the Xafari.
A waterproof, multi-color, high-resolution, 2.4-in smart TFT display automatically adjusts brightness for maximum visibility, features navigation and real-time ride metrics, and can connect to and control music on the rider’s phone and hold or reject calls. A bar-mounted scroll wheel controls 12 different speed and assistance levels and changes screens on the display.
MSRPs are $3000 for the Xyber and $2400 for the Xafari. They are available for pre-order at independent dealers nationwide and at store.segway.com, with an expected February start of deliveries.
