At the LA Auto Show today, Lucid Group, Inc. revealed its long-awaited second model and first SUV. With production starting in late 2024, the Gravity is said to build upon the innovations of the brand’s Air sedan to create a luxury high-performance electric SUV with space for up to seven adults in three rows and a projected driving range of more than 440 mi (708 km).
“The Gravity SUV represents a significant leap forward for Lucid’s world-leading technology and design,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO at Lucid, referring to how the Air sedan redefined the luxury sports sedan. “With Gravity, these innovations evolved, and our next-generation technology is applied with even greater effect, resulting in an electric SUV that can achieve over 440 miles of range with a battery pack a little more than half the size of some of our battery-hungry competitors.”
Preliminary dimensions put it about spot on what surely is the SUV’s primary competition, the Tesla Model X. The Gravity has a 198.2-in (5034-mm) length, 78.7-in (2000-mm) width, and 65.2-in (1656-mm) height on a 119.5-in (3035-mm) wheelbase. The Model X scales in at a 199.1-in (5057-mm) length, 78.7-in (2000-mm) width, and 66.1-in (1679-mm) height, but with a nearly three-inch shorter wheelbase at 116.7 in (2965 mm).
The Gravity’s exterior design is said to fuse aesthetics and utility, with a focus on efficiency leading to a target coefficient of drag of less than the Model X’s 0.24 (based on preproduction specification at a 155-mm or 6.1-in ride height), an aerodynamic profile unsurpassed by other three-row SUVs, according to Lucid. The Gravity is also differentiated by having a substantial 8-ft³ (226-L) frunk (front trunk) combined with an elongated cabin, pronounced shoulders, and above-tail spoiler.
“At Lucid, we believe in pushing the boundaries of design,” said Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand at Lucid. “We have leaned into this belief to maximize spaciousness, aerodynamic efficiency, and utility, resulting in an electric SUV with a previously unseen blend of attributes.”
Inside, Gravity features ample seating and cargo areas enabled by the long-roof design. The cabin’s second- and third-row seats can fold flat for more than 112 ft³ (3170 L) of total usable cargo space, eclipsing the Model X maximum of 91.6 ft3 (2593 L) by a significant margin. The Gravity’s sliding second-row seats combined with deployable “convenience tables” provide for a unique experience. “Remarkable legroom” is said to be carried through to the third row, enabling “a comfortable” seven-passenger configuration.
Gravity’s evolved Lucid user interface called Clearview Cockpit features a 34-in 6K curved “and uninterrupted” OLED display that floats above a new oval-shaped steering wheel for a better driver’s line of sight. Lucid’s customizable Pilot Panel with a quick access touch bar returns in the Gravity above a new sliding-glass-top center console.
A new platform developed for the SUV integrates the next generation of Lucid’s ultra-compact powertrain technology including the “most power-dense” EV motors in production globally and an evolution of its 900-V electrical architecture. Peak power of over 800 hp (597 kW) can accelerate the Gravity from 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in less than 3.5 s and provide a payload capacity of over 1500 lb (680 kg) and an additional projected 6000 lb (2722 kg) of towing capacity in top trim.
The SUV introduces a Lucid Zero Gravity enhanced optional air suspension package that automatically adapts to terrain needs to ensure a smooth ride on any surface. Manual adjustments also offer the ability to raise Gravity to maximize off-road capability or lower it to maximize performance and range. Wheels range from 20- to 23-in in diameter.
“Lucid’s design and engineering philosophy has always prioritized doing more with less,” said Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid. “Gravity applies this principle to offer customers more of what they need—more space, more utility, and more range—while avoiding excess battery cells, added cost of ownership, and unnecessary weight.”
He added that the Gravity’s battery pack is about half the size of some competitors, setting new standards for SUVs with a smaller, lighter, more sustainable unit while offering that exceptional range. The evolved 900-V architecture makes Gravity’s EV charging system one of the fastest globally. Customers can add up to 200 mi (322 km) of range in about 15 min when connected to a 350-kW DC fast charger.
“Gravity will take our customers farther with less batteries and therefore using less precious energy,” added Rawlinson. “Its smaller, lighter, and higher technology battery pack means fewer precious metals and minerals, less energy to charge, less electricity consumed, less pressure upon the grid, and a lighter weight and more dynamic vehicle.”
Gravity’s luxury in-car experience introduces Lucid Sanctuary and Lucid Spaces interactive well-being features. The Sanctuary set of experiences is designed to introduce user tranquility on the road or when parked at a charging station, with a single tap transforming the cabin with a combination of visuals, lighting, audio, temperature, and massage. With Spaces, a single tap transforms the cabin by immersing drivers in the soothing atmosphere of locations like Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree.
A key element of the experiences is a 22-speaker Surreal Sound Pro system with Dolby Atmos that delivers spatial audio. Lucid partnered with experts at Berlin-based Meditopia to offer a guided in-vehicle meditation experience for mindfulness without exiting the vehicle. Power for brought-in devices is supplied by three 120-V and six USB-C ports.
For Gravity, the Lucid DreamDrive advanced driver assistance system gets more sensors and better radar for better performance for lane centering, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and emergency braking. The Micro Lens Array headlights adapt to oncoming traffic and terrain for a smoother, safer drive.
Lucid said that Gravity will be competitively priced in the full-size premium SUV category, with an expected U.S. starting price—excluding tax, title, license, options, destination, and other fees—of under $80,000. Customers can register their interest in the Gravity at www.lucidmotors.com/gravity.
