Damon Motors today released a few details and teaser images of the electric motorcycle that will follow its first, the HyperSport. The new HyperFighter Colossus is said to be the ultimate stripped-down urban assault sportbike derived from the HyperSport and like that bike built on the company’s HyperDrive platform.
Damon says that HyperDrive is the world’s first monocoque-constructed, 100% electric, multi-variant powertrain, and it will form the nucleus of all its motorcycles. The HyperSport family of motorcycles delivers class-leading power and new technologies including CoPilot and Shift for smarter, safer, and more exhilarating riding.
Just 100 fully optioned HyperFighter Colossus “first-in-line” motorcycles will be available worldwide for order starting today, December 8, at 9 a.m. ET on the Damon website. Once sold out, this version will be retired. Damon will officially unveil the HyperFighter Colossus at CES 2002 on January 5 in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“The HyperFighter Colossus motorcycle redefines the streetfighter category with a powerfully charged limited-edition model,” said Jay Giraud, Co-founder and CEO, Damon Motors. “The HyperFighter is a stripped-down demon of a bike that is not for the faint of heart so that riders can fight traffic, fight gas, and fight compromise. We’re excited to give the naked sports bike fanatic everything they want, coupled with the unrivaled technological features found only on Damon bikes.”
The HyperFighter Colossus features 200 hp (149 kW) and greater than 200 N·m (148 lb·ft) for a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) blast in less than 3 s and a top speed of 170 mph (274 km/h). In addition to HyperDrive, and like the HyperSport, the new bike gets Damon’s CoPilot 360-degree advanced warning system that uses radar, cameras, and other sensors to track the speed, direction, and velocity of up to 64 moving objects around the motorcycle for situational awareness. It also gets Shift, which at the push of a button allows riders to electronically transform the handlebar position and a retractable windscreen while in motion to dramatically reduce wind resistance.
HyperFighter Colossus retails for $472 per month, or $35,000, and can be reserved with a fully refundable $250 deposit. Additional specifics on the HyperFighter will be detailed at CES 2022.
It’s been a very busy 2021 and Q4 for Damon, which announced a 110,000-ft² (10,220-m²) manufacturing facility in Surrey, BC, Canada to begin production in 2022, and the surpassing of $45 million in orders for its flagship HyperSport motorcycle. In addition, the company announced this week the securing of additional funding and its expansion into Europe.
It successfully completed a $30 million Series B funding round led by House of Lithium along with several strategic partners. The company will be used to further drive production and manufacturing efforts as the company prepares to open its Vancouver factory and begin delivery of HyperSport motorcycles in 2022.
“The ride has been nonstop since we first unveiled the HyperSport at CES,” said Giraud. “As 2022 approaches, it’s full speed ahead with the backing of House of Lithium and the investment community—as well as the riding community.”
According to Damon, motorcycles have seen a resurgence in the wake of COVID-19 as people adopt personal modes of transportation to maintain social distancing. Concurrently, the increased attention toward global warming and the effects of climate change have resulted in riders demanding cleaner alternatives that are not reliant on harmful fossil fuels. The company says it has answered the call with its line of electric motorcycles that offers a cleaner, quieter, and a safer path forward for riders and the environment.
“Damon Motors has unveiled a comprehensive vision for e-powersports that encompasses both the needs of riders as well as the needs of the planet,” said Andy DeFrancesco, Chair & CEO, SOL Global Investments and House of Lithium. “Their forward-thinking innovation has resulted in a disruptive, exciting path forward that is altering the landscape of motorcycling.”
To meet Damon’s growth plans and market demand, the company currently has 150 new career opportunities in all disciplines including engineers with automotive, battery, powertrain, and embedded software expertise. It also announced yesterday a planned European expansion to bring its HyperSport motorcycles to the continent, targeting countries including Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. To support the initiative, Damon is expanding its management team, naming Dino Mariutti as Head of EU Operations.
“Europe is a massive market opportunity for Damon, and we aim to be at the forefront of e-mobility, technology, and safety in this territory,” said Giraud. “We expect to see greater demand in Europe for Damon motorcycles ordered vs. North American orders. With the European market rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles, we are certain that this great continent will be a dominant market for Damon and the move towards safer and cleaner two-wheelers.”
Of the HyperSport orders to date, an increasing number of customers are originating from Europe.
“In many regions of Europe, two-wheelers are the primary mode of transport,” said Dominique Kwong, Co-founder & COO, Damon Motors. “And equally as important as electric mobility is safety. Our 360° Co-Pilot system makes riding safer, and we want to lead the way to safer, cleaner mobility in Europe, where motorcycle culture is big.”
Damon will begin its move into Europe in 2022 with a roadshow with stops in key European cities followed by branded retail experience centers where consumers can view and test ride models. Once established in the market, Damon plans to build a manufacturing plant to give the company the flexibility to cater specifically to the growing Euro e-market and deliver on the company’s aggressive sales volume targets.
“Each country has its own unique culture, and often even within those countries there are myriad micro-cultures dependent on the region,” said Doug Penman, Chief Marketing Officer & VP, Brand, Damon Motors. “For this reason, Damon has a unique marketing strategy, advertising plan, and product approach for each of these markets.”
Mariutti is building a team to support the launch in Europe, open experience centers, and participate in roadshows and other events.
“As an avid motorcyclist, I believe that smarter and safer technologies need to be available to all two-wheel markets,” said Mariutti. “I am focused on bringing Damon’s innovations to Europe and making Damon’s expansion a success that adds value to shareholders and all stakeholders alike.”
Damon is soft launching in Italy to validate its research, business model, and go-to-market plan. The company has partnered with Correggio, Italy-based headquartered in the leading brand that produces chassis dynamometer test benches for the global automotive industry Bapro. As Damon builds out its U.S. and European event calendar, the Bapro partnership will provide Damon with a demo roadshow tour experience.
